6 must-go places in Mahabaleshwar

Located in the sprawling stretch of the Western Ghats, Mahabaleshwar is the highest hill station in the Maharashtra. The station rises up to 1372 metres and derives its name from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘God of Great Power’. The hill station was the summer capital of the governor of the British presidency and the imperial rulers have since built many mansions, cottages and bungalows around the stations. Visitors can also go to various viewpoints providing panoramic glimpses of the entire valley. Tourists come in swarms during Diwali and winter season during which the hotels in Mahabaleshwar have the highest occupancy rate. The temperature is cool throughout the year though winters may be more chilling.

1) Pratapgad fort :



Situated at about 24 kms away from Mahabaleshwar, this historic for was built by Maratha ruler Shivaji in 1656. It was in this very fort where Afzal Khan, the mighty general of Bijapur, was killed by Shivaji. The fort offers a great view of the Konkan coast and the surrounding areas.

2) Panchganga Mandir :



The five rivers from which the temple derives its name are: Savitri, Venna, Krishna, Gayatri, and Konya. The temple is also famous among tourists as old Mahabaleshwar temple.

3) Wilson Point :



Being the highest point of Mahabaleshwar, Wilson point introduces the customers to the splendour of the hill station and the surrounding valley. For tourists, there are three observation towers to give the panoramic vistas of the entire landscape.

4) Catholic Church :



Tourists may find it quite interesting to visit the old Roman Catholic Holy Cross Church in Mahabaleshwar. The church was built in 1830 has a very sumptuous interior.

5) Old Mahabaleshwar :

The old Mahabaleshwar is filled with many beautiful sceneries and ancient temples. Situated 20 kilometres away from Mahabaleshwar, this historic version of present day Mahabaleshwar is a great place for trekking and other adventure sports.

6) Venna Lake :



This major tourist attraction of Mahabaleshwar is surrounded by trees on all sides. The best time for boating on this lake would be an evening ride during winters amidst the winter fog. There are many hotels in Mahabaleshwar who could easily arrange a bus trip to Venna lake.
